Season 2: Healing & Cancer Trailer
Dr. Wayne Jonas:
Hello, I’m Dr. Wayne Jonas.
Dr. Alyssa McManamon:
And, I’m Dr. Alyssa McManamon. Welcome to season 2 of How Healing Works. I am excited to join Dr. Jonas this season as we continue the discussion of whole person care, but with a focus on healing and cancer. As a triple board-certified hematologist-oncologist, I’m passionate about helping other clinicians deliver the type of cancer care that we all want to be doing, but are struggling to deliver.
Dr. Wayne Jonas: Well, it's great to work with you, Alyssa, and I'm happy to have you join me! For those of you who tuned into season 1, you learned that I am a board-certified, practicing family physician with over 35 years of experience, an expert in integrative health and health care service delivery.
From my time working in several health care institutions – the National Institutes of Health, World Health Organization, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research – I've learned that caring for a patient requires understanding what truly matters to the person to improve their health outcomes. When we deliver care with the person at the center, we understand that a person is made up of mind, body, and spirit, and also their behavior, their engagement, not just for the treatment of the disease itself, which is important, but also for improving their health and wellbeing.
Dr. McManamon and I both have a military medical background and experience with cancer, hers as a practicing oncologist and mine on a more personal level with cancer in my family and also as a primary care physician taking care of patients who have had cancer and are undergoing treatment in collaboration with oncologists. This year, we collaborated to write a book called "Healing and Cancer,” focused on whole person care within oncology and within primary care for patients with cancer.
Dr. Alyssa McManamon:
In this podcast, we will discuss what whole person care looks like within cancer care. You might be asking yourself: Is it really that different? Yes and no. As we expand on topics from our book “Healing and Cancer,” we’lll describe and share our experiences of what a whole person cancer care appointment looks like, discuss when is the best time to start and do whole person care, and how to have difficult conversations with patients. We want to share what has worked and what has not worked for us.
Dr. Wayne Jonas:
Like last season, we will invite guests and experts on the podcast to join us as we share how other clinicians are embracing a whole person care approach. Have you been interested in transforming your practice to a more person-centered or whole person care approach? And you're not sure where to begin. Along with our podcast, we'll have many tools to support you in this endeavor. You can check out our new CME and CEU course on whole person cancer care and our book's companion study guide. And of course, grab a copy of the book.
Dr. Alyssa McManamon:
As you listen to each episode our hope is that you will become inspired to provide the type of care you have always wanted to deliver.
